The Changing Face of BI

The term business intelligence (BI) first surfaced in the early 1990s at a time when data warehousing was an emerging technology. In the nearly two decades since then, the definitions, expectations, and technologies of BI have undergone many changes. The continuing evolution of BI presents both challenges and opportunities for every BI professional. This presentation explores the evolution of BI with a look at the past, the present, and what we can expect for the future. We will discuss trends and implications for:

  • Early, current, and emerging definitions of business intelligence
  • The shift of attention from data to analytics
  • The shift of attention from technology to business
  • The theme of “listening to the data”
  • The pervasive BI movement, or “BI for the masses”
  • The human, cultural, and business implications of BI in the mainstream

Dave Wells, CBIP, is consultant, mentor, and teacher in the field of business intelligence. He brings to every consulting endeavor a unique and balanced perspective regarding the roles of technology in business. This perspective—refined through a career of more 35 years that blended business and technical roles—helps to align business and information technology in the most effective ways. Dave focuses on strategic and organizational alignment as the keys to building and sustaining valuable and high-impact BI cultures and systems.
